The power of the guardian. Kindness to aid friends. A shield to repel all.

Dive to the Heart

The Dream Shield (ガードオブドリーム Gādo obu Dorīmu?, lit. "Guard of Dream") is a weapon which appears in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. It appears within both Sora and Roxas's Dive to the Heart, alongside the Dream Sword and Dream Rod.

These three weapons represent the paths that Sora and Roxas can take — the path of the warrior, the guardian, or the mystic. As the weapon of the guardian, the Dream Shield focuses on defense and avoids strength, and if Sora or Roxas choose it, they will learn their defensive abilities at lower levels. Additionally, Sora will eventually gain two extra Item Slots.

If Sora chooses the Dream Shield in Kingdom Hearts, he will use it as a weapon throughout his Dive to the Heart. Like the Dream Sword and Dream Rod it will disappear at the end of the dream. In contrast, if Roxas chooses the Dream Shield in Kingdom Hearts II, it will immediately transform into his Kingdom Key.

In Kingdom Hearts, after obtaining each of the seven spell Arts, Merlin will reward Goofy's progress with the Dream Shield. Goofy can also equip this shield within Mission Mode in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Design[]

The Dream Shield has a simple design. It is pentagonal and its bottom three corners are rounded. It has a red border and the top and bottom two corners all sport a silver bolt or pin. Most of the face of the shield is black, save for the prominent Hidden Mickey symbol in the center. This symbol is red and has a pale yellow outline.

Gameplay[]

The Dream Shield has identical stats to the other Dream Weapons in Kingdom Hearts, with each having 1 strength. However, due to the Dream Shield being held and used differently than the Dream Rod or Dream Sword, there are unique animations for it. Sora will push the front of the shield forward when swinging it rather than the edge, and the shield will be held by the handles when Sora carries it while unmoving.

The Dream Shield also features a unique sound effect when opening a chest, and the only one different from the sound used for every other game. Unlike in most games where there will be a ‘tap-tap’ with a metallic clank, the edge of the shield is used to open a chest, causing a rhythmic wood rapping sound. This sound is only used one time in the game (as there only is ever one chest to open in dive into the heart) and is never used again in any of the games.

Goofy can wield this weapon in Mission Mode within Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days by equipping the Zero Gear. The ground combo consists of a series of continuous 360 degree spins.

The aerial combo consists of a downward slash with the bottom of the shield followed by Goofy doing a backflip, jumping on the shield, and driving it downward.
