Item cards are part of the set of cards used for items in Chain of Memories and Re:Chain of Memories. They are identified by their green border, which they share with friend cards. Chain of Memories features a total of seven item cards available to Sora, two of which are available to Riku, and three of which are usable by certain bosses. Item cards provide a unique effect not seen outside of certain rare enemy cards, namely the ability to instantly reload your deck, recover unreloadable cards, and reset your Reload Card. Unlike items seen in other games they cannot be used to recover HP.

Item cards are single-use only, cannot be turned into a Premium Card, and cannot be recovered once used. They must be unlocked through either story progression or, in a few cases, completing a minigame or by finding them in a Room of Rewards. They are also incredibly expensive in terms of Card Points when considering their single-use limit, making it highly desirable to avoid card breaks from opponents lest your item card is wasted entirely. Because of this stocking the item card first, followed by two more cards to avoid a counter card break is recommended, as the item card cannot be used afterwards anyway. The Air Pirate card's Item Bracer can be used to prevent enemies from breaking your item cards entirely.

Item cards are used in only four sleights, one of which is Holy, a powerful late-game sleight that uses three expensive item cards. In three other instances item cards are used to replace unique friend cards only available in certain worlds.

Riku's item cards[]

Because Riku has fixed decks he does not always have access to item cards, except for a few instances. He can use a Potion in Hollow Bastion, and a Hi-Potion in Agrabah in the original version. In the remake he has access to a Potion in Twilight Town, and a Hi-Potion in Olympus Coliseum, and Destiny Islands. He also always has access to a Hi-Potion in Castle Oblivion, which includes the floor entrance and exit halls, in both versions of the game. He does not have access to item cards whenever he enters Dark Mode, no matter where he is.

Bosses' item cards[]

Item cards are the only card type usable both by playable characters and bosses that rely on card decks. Although the card will appear the same functionally they are technically slightly different. In the original GBA version of the game all item cards used by bosses only reload their deck, and do not actually restore unreloadable cards, nor reset the reload counter. In the remake they do recover a boss' lost cards.

Cloud makes use of Hi-Potions, and Vexen is the only person to use Mega-Ethers. All other bosses (plus Vexen) that rely on decks, with the exception of Captain Hook and Lexaeus, make heavy use of Elixirs to restore their spent cards. Because of this breaking them on time is crucial when relying on defeating a boss by attrition.
