Kingdom Key (card)

The basic Kingdom Key card.

Attack cards are part of the set of Cards used for gameplay in Chain of Memories and Re:Chain of Memories. Sora and Riku use attack cards to perform normal attacks, or to combine with other cards to perform sleights. Attack cards are identified by their red borders.

They represent the Keyblades used by Sora (and Soul Eater for Riku) in Kingdom Hearts; the only Keyblade missing is the "Jungle King", its absence unexplained. Also included are two Keyblades that were introduced in Final Mix: Diamond Dust and One-Winged Angel.

Re:Chain of Memories added six additional attack cards based on Keyblades that Sora obtained in Kingdom Hearts II, which can be obtained as game completion bonuses. In the 1.5 ReMIX re-release of Re:Chain of Memories, four of those attack cards were removed and replaced with four of the Keyblades that Roxas wields in 358/2 Days.

Mechanics[]

Attributes[]

All of Sora's attack cards posses their own attributes; strike, thrust, combo finish, and break recovery, along with a required Card Point (CP). Re:Chain of Memories also has an additional swing speed stat, which simply affects how fast Sora will attack. Similarly break recovery (also called CB recovery) affects how long you have to wait before you can act if you get a card break. Cards also have an element, typically physical, with a few outliers such as neutral, fire, ice, and lightning. Elements deal either more or less damage based on enemy vulnerabilities and resistances, varying between 50% more or less damage, or even healing them. Neutral is the only type that ignores these resistances.

Stats are indicated with a limit of eight possible levels, ranging from D, D+, C, C+, B, B+, A, and finally a star (☆). Note that cards show a general attack level when building a deck, which is based on their total average, and is a poor indicator of their true use in combos. The break recovery stat also does not have D or + levels, with a C lasting 117 milliseconds, which is lowered by 17 milliseconds by every level.

Sora's base damage stat is 10, and when it comes to the strike, thrust, and combo finish stat multipliers; the level D can be assumed to be ×0.5, with each incremental level adding ×0.5 power, culminating in ×4 for those with a star. Finishers are unique in that they always deal ×0.5 extra damage, meaning a B+ rank finisher will instead deal A rank damage. One-Winged Angel is unique in that it adds a bonus of ×2 instead of ×0.5, making it the most powerful finisher card.

Combos[]

Cards when used in a normal attack combo always perform three hits; a strike, a forwards thrust, and a finisher. Because of the way card damage is affected by their stat, actual damage output can vary wildly when the right card is used in the wrong place. For example, Oblivion has a combo finish of D, but a strike and thrust of A, making it terrible when used as the finisher, and very strong when used as the strike or thrust.

Card Points[]

Stat Range CP formula
10~19 10 + (value − 1)
A 15~24 15 + (value − 1)
B 20~38 20 + ((value − 1) × 2)
C 25~43 25 + ((value − 1) × 2)
D 30~57 30 + ((value − 1) × 3)

CP affects how much a card cast and thus how many total you can put in your deck. Each level, ranging from D to a star (with no + levels), costs a set number of points, with an additional cost based on the card value. D cards always have a base cost 30 points, which lowers by 5 for each higher level, with a base of 10 for those with a star for their CP stat.

Typically stronger cards have a lower CP stat, thus making them exponentially more expensive. Cards with a value of 0 also function as if they have a value of 10 for the sake of the formula, thus making those the most expensive.

Enemy cards[]

Several enemy cards positively affect attack cards directly, such as the Guard Armor card's Wide Attack to slightly increase your range, and the Card Soldiers' card's Attack Haste to drastically improve your attack speed. The Search Ghost card's Drain lets you deal more damage and drain HP, but reduces experience gained. The Jafar-Genie card's Attack Bracer stops enemies from breaking your attack cards.

The Dragon Maleficent card's Overdrive grants increased damage at the cost of reload speed. The remake's new Organization XIII cards also includes the incredibly powerful Roxas card's Double Strike that doubles your attack card damage, or the Saïx card's Combo Boost that raises your damage until you suffer a card break.

Reverse/Rebirth[]

Unlike Sora, Riku is limited to only a single attack card. The values and order of the Soul Eater cards are predetermined before entering a world and specifically designed to handle the enemies of that world. When in D Mode the damage output for his strikes and thrusts increases by 50%. Zexion will, during his bossfight, place Dummy Cards in Riku's deck that stun him when they are used.
