The Ability system in Dream Drop Distance is very similar to that of Birth By Sleep. While active techniques are implemented through the Deck Command system, passive abilities are managed through the Abilities menu, and with only two exceptions must be purchased from the Ability Links of the protagonists' Spirits.

Equipped abilities can be activated or deactivated at will, and when an ability is highlighted, the menu will also display any Spirits whose Ability Links contain a yet-to-be-purchased iteration of that ability, even if the player has already maxed out the ability; once the ability is purchased, the Spirit will not be displayed even if the ability is not currently equipped.

The Abilities list is divided into three categories. Stats abilities encompass those which increase the protagonists' stats, but are only equipped for as long as the Spirit providing them remains in the party. Meanwhile, Support abilities and Spirit abilities, which provide miscellaneous benefits to the protagonists and their Spirits, respectively, remain equipped permanently once they are purchased.

Status Abilities[]

Ability Max. number Description
HP Boost 5 Increases your HP. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Fire Boost 3 Increases the damage dealt by your fire attacks. Multi-install the ability to deal even more damage.
Blizzard Boost 3 Increases the damage dealt by your blizzard attacks. Multi-install the ability to deal even more damage.
Thunder Boost 3 Increases the damage dealt by your thunder attacks. Multi-install the ability to deal even more damage.
Water Boost 3 Increases the damage dealt by your water attacks. Multi-install the ability to deal even more damage.
Cure Boost 3 Increases the amount of HP you recover with Cure commands. Multi-install the ability to recover even more.
Item Boost 3 Increases the effectiveness of recovery item commands. Multi-install the ability for an even larger improvement.
Attack Haste 5 Shortens the reload time for all attack commands in your deck. Multi-install the ability for even quicker reloading.
Magic Haste 5 Shortens the reload time for all magic commands in your deck. Multi-install the ability for even quicker reloading.
Attack Boost 3 Increases the damage you deal with physical attacks. Multi-install the ability to increase it's effects.
Magic Boost 3 Increases the damage you deal with magic. Multi-install the ability to increase it's effects.
Defense Boost 3 Decreases the damage you take from attacks. Multi-install the ability to increase it's effects.
Fire Screen 5 Increases your resistance to fire attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Blizzard Screen 5 Increases your resistance to blizzard attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Thunder Screen 5 Increases your resistance to thunder attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Water Screen 5 Increases your resistance to water attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Dark Screen 5 Increases your resistance to dark attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Light Screen 5 Increases your resistance to light attacks. Multi-install the ability to bump it up even further.
Mini Block 1 Fully protects you from mini status.
Blindness Block 1 Fully protects you from blind status.
Confusion Block 1 Fully protects you from confusion status.
Bind Block 1 Fully protects you from bind status.
Poison Block 1 Fully protects you from poison status.
Slow Block 1 Fully protects you from slow status.
Sleep Block 1 Fully protects you from sleep status.
Stop Block 1 Fully protects you from stop status.
Reload Boost 1 Shortens the reload time for all commands installed in your deck whenever your HP falls below 25%.
Defender 1 Increases your Defense whenever your HP falls below 25%.

Support Abilities[]

Ability Max. number Description
Combo Plus 3 Adds one stroke to your ground combos. Multi-install the ability for even longer combos.
Air Combo Plus 3 Adds one stroke to your aerial combos. Multi-install the ability for even longer combos.
Combo Master 1 Allows you to continue a combo unbroken even if one of your attacks fails to hit the enemy.
EXP Boost 1 Doubles the EXP you receive whenever your HP falls below 25%.
EXP Walker 1 Awards you 1 EXP for every step you take.
EXP Zero 1 Prevents you from gaining any EXP when you defeat enemies.
Damage Syphon 1 Charges your Link Gauges as you take damage.
Second Chance 1 Ensures you always retain 1 HP after an attack that would otherwise finish you off, unless you are already down to 1 HP.
Once More 1 Ensures you always retain 1 HP throughout a combo that would otherwise finish you off, unless you have 1 HP to start with.
Scan 1 Displays the HP of the targeted enemy.
Leaf Bracer 1 Prevents you from taking damage while using Cure commands.
Treasure Magnet 5 Automatically scoops up nearby prizes for you. Multi-install the ability to increase range.

Spirit Abilities[]

Ability Max. number Description
Link Critical 1 Charges a Link Gauge if you and that Spirit land your attacks at the same time.
Support Boost 3 Causes the effects of Spirit support magic to last longer. Multi-install the ability to extend the time further.
Waking Dream 1 Ensures Spirits always retain 1 HP after attacks that would otherwise finish them off, unless they are already down to 1 HP.
